New promoter appointed to serve Dominican Nuns globally

ROME — On 19 December 2025, the Master of the Order, fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP, appointed fr. Cristóbal Torres Iglesias, OP, a member of the Province of St. Martin de Porres in the USA, as General Promoter for the Nuns. Fr. Cristóbal succeeds fr. Fernando Antonio García Fernández, OP, a member of the Province of Saint James in Mexico.

“I am truly looking forward to working with and learning from our nuns,” said fr. Cristóbal about the new appointment. Fr. Cristóbal, who has served as General Promoter for the Laity since 2023, will continue to serve the Dominican Laity in that capacity, even as he begins his service to the Order’s contemplative nuns.

The promoter of nuns is entrusted with fostering communion between the Master and the monasteries of Dominican nuns worldwide and with supporting their life according to the Constitutions of the Order. In this role, the Promoter serves as the principal liaison for matters concerning governance and formation, while also advocating for the needs of the nuns and helping to ensure the stability, unity, and flourishing of Dominican contemplative life at the heart of the Order’s mission of preaching.

The cloistered nuns constitute the oldest branch of the Order of Preachers, predating the friars by 10 years with the foundation of the Monastery of Our Lady of Prouille in Southern France in 1206. Today there are more than 1,900 solemnly professed nuns in the Order.

As he begins this important service to the Order, the friars invite the entire Dominican Family to keep fr. Cristóbal in their prayers, asking the Lord to grant him wisdom, patience, and charity as he accompanies the monasteries of nuns entrusted to his care, and to bless his ministry so that Dominican contemplative life may continue to flourish in fidelity, peace, and fruitfulness for the good of the Church.
